ANNOUNCEMENTS

ALL SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS AND INFORMATION CAN ALSO BE FOUND IN THE GUIDANCE OFFICE

Good morning Seniors!
Just a friendly reminder that students MUST have a Parchment account set up in order for transcripts to be sent. I can send to you an "unofficial transcript". However, you must request through Parchment for official transcripts. This is the quickest, most secure, and preferred way to send transcripts. You will need to have your account up and running in order for me to send your final transcripts come May 2022. If you have not yet created your account, please go to the following site below to complete ASAP. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Mountwest Maritime Academy

student scholarships.org

Mountwest Maritime Academy, a part of Mountwest Community and Technical College, has been serving the needs of the River Industry since 2001. One of the most successful courses is the Deckhand Basic training course. This 7-day course is designed to acquaint the prospective entry-level deckhand with working aboard a commercial towboat on the Western Rivers and to assist the deckhand in obtaining a job in the industry. Starting salaries can range from $35,000 to $45,000/yr. A Deckhand job is just the beginning of an exciting and rewarding career that could lead to salaries well over $100,000 in under 5 years.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that the demand for Water Transportation workers will continue to grow over the coming years. The Mountwest Maritime Academy is familiar with this demand and provides job placement assistance to our graduating students. We currently boast a 97% placement rate of our graduating students and work with several employers that recruit directly from the school.

We understand that not all graduating Seniors are interested in attending a traditional 2 or 4 year college after high school. This course provides an excellent opportunity for students that are ready to start a career without acquiring the debt that comes with attending college.

We have several classes coming up.

April 26 – May 2
May 17 – May 23
July 12 – July 18

Due to COVID are class sizes are limited. Any students interested in attending one of these classes should contact us to reserve a seat. Students may contact the Academy directly at 304-697-5616 or checkout our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/mountwestmaritimeacademy/. They can also email me at NewbyR@mctc.edu or the Academy Director, Sherri Sowards, at Sowardss@mctc.edu.

Ohio Township Association Scholarship Program

Ohio Township Association

We are pleased to share with you that the Ohio Township Association’s (OTA) annual college scholarship is now available online. The OTA has (4) $1,500 scholarships available to high school seniors who will be graduating in 2021 and plan to attend an Ohio college or university in the fall of 2021. The eligibility requirements remain the same and require each applicant to reside in a township in the state of Ohio and attend a township meeting.

Please direct your seniors to ohiotownships.org/scholarship-program. This will take them to the information and requirements page. They must apply through the link on this page. Each student is permitted to apply for both scholarships but must do so with separate applications. The deadline for our scholarship application is January 28, 2021, at 11:45 p.m.

We are aware that the first year in which a college scholarship switches from paper applications to online ones may be a bit confusing and might cause the application to fall short of reaching the same audience it did in previous years. While we believe that the online application will be more convenient and simpler for students to access in the long-term, in the meantime, we hope your assistance will publicize this resource appropriately.

Should you have any questions, please contact me at frame@ohiotownships.org or 614-863-0045.

Thank you,

Heather Frame

SEALS

To the Class of 2021 and 2022. This is NOT a Graduation requirement. THIS IS OPTIONAL. Students MUST request a transcript audit from Mrs. Riffe, Guidance Counselor, no later than April 2, 2021 in order to determine if they have earned a Seal. State law created 12 diploma seals for students to demonstrate academic, technical and professional readiness for careers, college, the military or self-sustaining professions. Each seal allows students to demonstrate knowledge and skills essential for future success in their chosen post-high school paths. Students will demonstrate readiness by earning at least two diploma seals, one of which must be state defined. Seals help students develop an array of critical skills that are valuable to them as they transition to the next steps after high school. Schools should consider encouraging students to pursue seals that meet their individual interests and skills. Graduation planning will be an important step in supporting students in earning their seals. See the following link for more detailed information on Seals:  SEALS LINK
